Some easy StEPS to improve university essays drawn from my work in English Language Teaching and IELTS assessment, and over two decades of supporting UCAS applications to Russell Group universities:
CONTENT
10. Don’t focus on your family’s or parent’s achievements at the expense of your own.
9. Name the degree programme. Imagine that the admissions tutor does not know what you are applying for.
8. Don’t List achievements without connecting them to the programme.
7. Don’t repeat information shared on the form or elsewhere in the essay.
STRUCTURE
6. Have a clear focus for each paragraph.
5. Don’t use long winded phrases when shorter clearer structures would work equally, if not better.
4. Connect your introduction and conclusion.
LANGUAGE
3. Keep it simple
2. Avoid Slang
EDITING
1. Pay attention to details like punctuation and spacing
